How Rachel Teaches Ten Math Levels in One SPED Classroom

Rachel's middle-school class is composed of 10 students, ages 11 to 14, with a wide range of cognitive and developmental needs, several of them nonverbal. Their math levels range from pre-K to second grade. With ten different starting points in one room, and just two assistants, Rachel is effectively running several classes at once.

Time goes back to teaching
The math block runs on its own for 25 minutes, so that time goes to the students who need help, not to printing worksheets.

Growth is easy to prove
The students are exempt from state testing, so Rachel prints progress straight from Happy Numbers for year-end review.

The students stay motivated
Virtual manipulatives and interaction hold attention, so kids can concentrate longer and put in more effort, which matters most for SPED students.
