Exploring Capacity in Grade 4 Module 2: A Kitchen Adventure with Our Helpful Robot

In the updated Grade 4 lessons on capacity, students join a friendly home robot as he helps a family with everyday activities. Through a variety of real-life tasks, the robot’s questions lead students to explore how different containers hold liquid and how to measure those amounts accurately. This new material also lays the foundation for understanding volume, while giving students hands-on practice with liters (L) and milliliters (mL).

What’s New in Grade 4’s Exploration of Capacity?

Students begin by identifying the capacity of familiar objects and learning how much liquid common containers can hold. As the robot encounters spoons, cups, and bottles, students help him understand which containers “hold more” or “hold less,” and how to record those measurements using the symbols L and mL.
These foundational tasks help students connect measurement units to everyday life, making the concept of capacity feel real and relevant.

As the storyline progresses, so do the mathematical challenges.
With the robot taking on more complex tasks, students guide him through conversions between liters and milliliters, and solve problems that require combining or comparing different amounts. This gradual build-up ensures students develop fluency and confidence — not just in recognizing units of measure, but in applying them thoughtfully in a variety of scenarios.

Hands-On Tools and Real-Life Connections

To make capacity meaningful, students interact with everyday measuring tools, like measuring cups and graduated containers. They practice:

  • reading measurement marks accurately,
  • interpreting scales (e.g., each line = 100 mL),
  • understanding that the same liquid can be measured differently depending on the container.
