Using Happy Numbers in Your Classroom
A practical playbook for weekly routines, small groups, intervention, and motivation
Year at a Glance
Happy Numbers is built around a simple yearly flow: students start with a Beginning-of-Year Assessment, continue on their individual Learning Pathway, and complete Mid-Year and End-of-Year assessments to show progress.

All Set: Customize the Time Target Only if Needed
Happy Numbers already sets a recommended weekly time goal for each student based on grade level. It works for most classrooms, but for Tier 2 or Tier 3 students, you can increase the target for better results. See how to adjust the time target.
Monitor Time and Task Target Completion
Time is important, but students who are overly motivated to hit their time target sometimes start cheating. That's why Happy Numbers also uses a task target — the number of tasks a student can comfortably complete within a week, based on their time target.
For weekly monitoring, focus on two indicators: time target completion and task target completion.

Fitting Happy Numbers into Your Small Group Instruction
The Happy Numbers slot can be either a Learning Pathway session or an Assignment — use Learning Pathway for regular adaptive practice, or an Assignment when you have a specific skill or topic in mind.
Sample 60-Minute Block
Three 15-minute rotations keep every group moving between teacher-led instruction, Happy Numbers, and Happy Printables.
Groups rotate through all three stations. Happy Numbers means Learning Pathway or an Assignment; Happy Printables is paper-based, hands-on practice.
Beyond the Math Block
Intervention Block
For students who need extra support, Happy Numbers can be used outside the math block as a short intervention session. Look at the skill report to see which students need help and where, then use our resources to support their learning.
Assignment
If a student needs a concept retaught, choose the Guided Practice activity for that skill. To confirm the concept has been learned, choose the Practice-type assignment. Explore assignment types.
Happy Printables
Use this when the student needs to show their thinking on paper. Choose the level of difficulty that suits their needs. Explore printables.
At Home
Recommend that parents make screen time count: Happy Numbers instead of games and endless scrolling. Students simply continue their Learning Pathway at home — no setup required — and the teacher can see progress on the dashboard the next day.
This is especially valuable for Tier 2 and Tier 3 students, who benefit most from additional practice time. For these students, every extra minute on Happy Numbers is a step toward grade-level readiness.
Working with SPED Students
SPED students often feel isolated: in a general education classroom, they notice they're working on a different program than their peers. In a special education classroom, they see that everyone is on a different level. Happy Numbers helps every student in the room feel like they're doing the same activity, even though the actual content each student works on can be completely different.
If your students' levels span fewer than 3 grades, place them all in one class — Placement will automatically assign the right pathways, which you can adjust if needed. If the range is more than 3 grades, create multiple classes (for example, a Grade 4 class and a Grade 1 class) and sort students into them, so Placement can work more effectively. Supporting Motivation All Year Long
Happy Numbers is designed to keep students engaged. Bright characters, gentle storytelling, visible progress, and game-like moments — such as hatching eggs or traveling to new planets — help students feel that practice is part of a larger learning journey.
However, we understand that even the best product may not work equally well for every student. We also know how important group motivation is in the classroom — and how valuable it can be to extend that motivation beyond the digital product itself. That's why we created additional tools to help keep students engaged.
Print this class chart PDF and add students' names as they complete a certain number of tasks in Happy Numbers. Some milestones include a special reward that students can select at random by rolling a die.

3. Fun Friday
Offer a special activity to students who meet both weekly targets — or to the whole class if everyone reaches them. You can choose an activity from our list or use one of your own classroom traditions.
For extra motivation, display the charts from the Weekly Dashboard on the whiteboard so students can see how many classmates still need to meet their targets.

4. Certificates [link to certificates]
Choose the achievements you'd like to recognize and use our certificates — available in color and black and white — to celebrate students who stand out. A Spanish version is also available.
